P.E. UNIFORM
For P.E. children wear T-shirt with shorts, jogging bottoms or leggings. The children will also need trainers or plimsolls especially for outdoor work. Girls with long hair will need to tie it back for P.E.
JEWELLERY AND VALUABLES
For children’s safety and to avoid unnecessary upset jewellery should not be worn in school. Because of the obvious dangers of earrings worn during P.E. we insist that only studs are worn in pierced ears.
Children should not bring valuables to school. This includes toys which can easily be lost or broken. No responsibility will be taken for loss or damage. If money is brought to school for any reason it must be given to an adult at the beginning of the day for safekeeping.
BEHAVIOUR
The school is a community in which behaviour is based on mutual respect and consideration for others. The class teacher, who knows the children best, is responsible for their day-to-day care. Teachers’ promote standards of behaviour in line with the school’s agreed Behaviour Policy. In school, it is in class, during assemblies and at playtime, that a child learns by example and discussion to appreciate the school’s values and acceptable standards of behaviour. Bullying will not be tolerated in any form. The class teacher will bring persistent anti-social behaviour to the attention of the child’s parents/carers initially. If necessary the Head Teacher will contact the parents/carers to discuss what further action needs to be taken.
On rare occasions of serious and persistent poor behaviour, the law permits the Head Teacher to exclude a child from the school for a fixed or permanent term.

The school runs a daily breakfast club which is open at 8am. Children are supervised by members of the school staff. A healthy breakfast costs just 50p per day. Breakfast Club is open to all of Shaftesbury’s pupils from Foundation Stage to Year 6.
AFTER SCHOOL
At the end of the day children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 must wait with their class teacher until they are collected. Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are walked downstairs into the playground.
Whilst we appreciate that there may be circumstances beyond your control which make you late, we have to stress that the school does not have the facilities for looking after children beyond 3.15pm. When children are not collected and we are unable to obtain you, we have a clear
responsibility to take children to a place of safety. The place of safety in these circumstances is the local Police Station or the Social Services Department.
LUNCHTIMES
School dinners are free. Some children prefer a packed lunch and provision is made for these to be eaten on the premises (no glass bottles are allowed).
Children that go home to lunch should not return to school before 12.50pm [KS1] or 1.20pm [KS2]. The school cannot be responsible for children arriving before this time.
ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Your child’s education is very important and therefore it is most desirable that a child maintains a good attendance record. However, absences due to illness will inevitable occur from time to time. When a child is absent for whatever reason, please telephone the school or send a note when the child returns.
If planning an extended absence abroad please bear in mind that the school is not allowed to retain a place for your child for longer than 2 weeks. If your child is absent for longer than this you must re-apply at a Children’s Centre for a place on your return.
Children’s mobile phones
Children should not bring mobile phones to school. However, if the parent or carer of a Year 5 or 6 child, wants them to bring a phone to school so that they can be contacted, before or after school, then the parent or carer must submit a written request to the class teacher and get the teacher’s permission.
At school, the phone will be given to the teacher on arrival and will be put in the teacher’s classroom cupboard or drawer. It will be given back at the end of the day. Under no circumstances will a child’s mobile phone be used during the school day.
Whether the phone, is stored in a teacher’s drawer or cupboard, the school gives no guarantee that the storage place will be locked or secure. The school will not replace, lost, stolen or broken mobile phones that children may bring to school.
THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM
All children will study according to their level of ability and maturity the National Curriculum subjects. These are English, Maths, Science, ICT, Design Technology, Art, History, Geography, Music and Physical Education. The school’s curriculum also includes Religious Education, PHSE (personal, social and health education) and Citizenship.
In English we give children experience of all types of the written word. We encourage the children to talk and express themselves well so that they become confident with both spoken and written language. We also place emphasis on the ability to listen.
In Mathematics we provide opportunity for children to understand numbers and their relationships, to solve problems and analyse data.
In Science the children will gain scientific knowledge. They will be involved in practical investigations and develop skills such as observing, classifying, recording, making and testing hypothesis.
In ICT children will gain experience in using a keyboard and software. They will develop word processing skills as well as data handling. They will also experience using the Internet especially for research purposes.
In Technology and Art we encourage the children to experience a variety of media, to plan, create and manipulate materials so that they develop the necessary skills.
In History and Geography we introduce the children to the history and geography of the local area, as well as extending their knowledge to include national and worldwide facts.
In P.E. children develop their skills in gymnastics, dance and outdoor games to develop good body co-ordination and control. We endeavour to give each child the enjoyment and satisfaction from physical activity and to foster the development of a good sporting attitude.
In Music we encourage the children to enjoy making music, to sing and to develop an appreciation of all types of music by creating an awareness of rhythm and melody.
We aim to offer our children a broad and balanced curriculum and to this end, aspects of equal opportunity, personal, social and health education as well as citizenship are included.
Religious Education
Daily assemblies of a mainly moral nature take place in the school. In Religious Education the children are taught about the Christian faith and also the faiths of the different groups that form our multi-cultural community, in-line with Newham’s agreed syllabus. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the daily act of Collective Worship and religious education lessons. If you wish to withdraw your child from these parts of school life, then in the first instance contact the class teacher or write to the Head teacher.
SEX EDUCATION
Sex education forms part of our approach to education in the areas of physical, social and health education. Children’s questions would be answered sensitively, in accordance with their age and level of maturity.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Newham has a policy of inclusive education, recognising the right of all children to attend a local school. The school is guided by the government’s Code of Practice for teaching children with special educational needs. Shaftesbury School welcomes children with special educational needs and
aims to give them full access to the curriculum, playing their part fully as members of the school community.
If parents have any requests or worries these should be directed in the first instance to the class teacher, or alternatively the Inclusion Manager, Mr Pasola or the Head teacher. The Educational Psychologist makes regular visits to the school. Most support is provided in the classroom environment.
We aim to extend the more able children, so they are working to their full potential. A small group of Gifted and Talented children have been identified and appropriate learning is set by the class teacher and is monitored by the Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Ms Nawaz
SCHOOL VISITS AND JOURNEYS
These play an important part in your child’s education. We like to offer the children the widest variety of educational day visits possible. Parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution to these. There is no obligation to contribute and no child will be excluded from any activity if parents are unable to make a contribution. However, for certain visits to take place we need to make sizeable costs e.g. coach hire and it will be appreciated that we need to ask for realistic contributions. In the event of insufficient contributions being received, it may be necessary to cancel a visit.
It is the school’s policy to encourage all pupils to participate in a residential visit sometime during their school career. These visits play an important part in the child’s education and development at Primary School. The cost of a residential visit is kept to a minimum but parents are required to pay the full amount due. This can be paid in instalments.
PROBLEMS / COMPLAINTS
The education of your child depends upon the co-operation developed between parents / carers and the school.
If we have any concerns about your child’s progress, happiness or behaviour then we will contact you straight away to discuss this with you.
If you have any concerns you want to discuss with us then please contact or come and see us as soon as possible. You are welcome to send in a note or telephone us about any minor worries. However if you want to talk to the class teacher or the Head Teacher then it is a good idea to telephone or send in a note to arrange a time when the person you want to see will be free to talk to you without other children or parents around.
If you are concerned about the behaviour of other people’s children, please do not approach the child / children but speak to a member of staff. We would not expect any child to be worried in school by an approach from another (sometimes angry) parent.
If you have a serious worry or complaint, then please arrange to talk this over with the Head teacher. We hope most worries can be sorted out in this way but if you want to make a formal complaint then full details of how to do this are displayed on the Parents Notice board or available from the School Office.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES IN SCHOOL
Special activities in school take place both during and after the school day. Such activities are varied and can include sports day and inter-school matches, visiting theatres, celebration assemblies, presentations by
visitors (eg. fire fighters, police personnel, the Bugman, Owltime etc.), the school fair etc.
There are also various activities available for children before school (Breakfast Club) and after school. Please see the Clubs notice board in the parents’ lobby.
